Highlander: The Card Game
Frequently Asked Questions: Arms and Tactics Edition
Official Version 1.1 - November 1998

Section A: Card Rulings

Section B: Immortals

Section C: Weapons of Choice

Section D: New Game Mechanics

-------- Section A: Card Rulings --------

1. Attacks

*Q1.1 These Dirty Trick do not say that they are unblockable and do no damage like past Dirty Tricks. Is this not true for these new Dirty Tricks?
*A1.1: The specific rules for Dirty Tricks were inadvertently left out of the rulebook, but you will find them in Highlander: The Rulebook whichwill be available online before the end of the year. In any case, all Dirty Trick attacks cannot be blocked and do no damage.

Q1.2 When do I determine if I'm Prone when I played Dirty Trick: Tackle?
A1.2 Immediately after you play Tackle, you must roll a die to determine if you become Prone. Your opponent rolls a die when it is determined whether the Tackle is successful or not during his turn.

Q1.3 When do you discard the cards for Dirty Trick: Head Butt?
A1.3 During your opponent's Defense Phase when he determines whether the Head Butt is successful or not

Q1.4 What is this Hand-like Icon on Dirty Trick: Choke?
A1.4 That is a Hand Icon. See Section D: New Game Mechanics - Hand Icons

Q1.5 So, each turn my opponent has to put one card from his Endurance under Choke while it is in play, right?
A1.5 Not quite. At the beginning of each of his turns, he must discard from his Endurance a number of cards equal to the number of cards currently under Choke and put them under Choke. So, the turn Choke is successful he must put 1 card under it, the next turn 1 card (since there is still only one card under Choke), third turn he has to put 2 cards (now that there are two cards under Choke), fourth turn 4 cards, fifth turn 8 cards, sixth turn 16 cards, then 32 cards, 64 cards, 128, 256. If you can keep the Choke in play, your opponent is most likely going to die from Exhaustion after several turns.

2. Defenses

Q2.1 The guards in this set do not have any text on them. Does this mean you can now attack to the same area as a guard if it wasn't used to block an attack that turn?
A2.1 The rules for Guards have been updated to include the text the Guards once had. The only change to how Guards are played and used is that you cannot play a Guard during your turn unless it is used to block an attack. This means you can no longer play an 'unprovoked' Guard.

3. Events

Q3.1 So what is my minimum deck size if I include one Big and Bad in my deck?
A3.1 If you only have one Big and Bad in your deck, your minimum deck size is 90. If you had two, 100; three, 110; four, 120; five, 130; and six, 140.

Q3.2 Could I use a Darius Event to add a Big and Bad card to my 60 card deck?
A3.2 No matter how Big and Bad gets into your deck, it will still change the minimum number of cards you can have in your deck and you will have to modify your deck to meet those requirements.

Q3.3 If I use the new Disarm with a block against the first attack of ten after my opponent plays Bloodlust and I successfully disarm him, then I avoid the other 9 attacks he played?
A3.3 Yes.

Q3.4 Do I have to draw 4 cards when playing Foresight?
A3.4 No. You may draw 1, 2, 3, or 4 cards or none at all.

Q3.5 If my opponent plays a 'discard to use' card on his turn and the first card I play on my turn is Impulse, can he use it before I take control of it?
A3.5 No. As soon as you play Impulse the card is now under your control.

Q3.6 If I use Impulse to take control of one of my opponent's 'discard to use' cards, can I discard to use it myself that same turn?
A3.6 Yes. Only when a 'discard to use' card is played do you have to wait for the next player's turn to discard it. Gaining control of any card is not the same as playing it.

Q3.7 Do I still have to discard an Event for being Prone when playing Up And At'em?
A3.7 Yes. You are still Prone as you play Up And At'em, but are no longer considered Prone after the card is played.

4. Locations

*Q4.1 If I have Dueling Grounds in play, can I still play attacks if my opponent has a Pedestrian: Hidden Attacks in play?
*A4.1 Yes. Pedestrian: Hidden is only allowing you to play Hidden Attacks which is essentially preventing you from playing non-Hidden Attacks. So Pedestrian: Hidden is considered to be a card which is preventing you from playing attacks.

Q4.2 If Gypsy Camp is in play and I play a Police on my opponent's Gypsy Lover, do I determine whether it goes to the top of his Endurance or his Discard Pile, or does my opponent get to choose?
A4.2 The owner of the Gypsy card gets to choose whether it goes to his Discard Pile or the top of his Endurance.

Q4.3 If I am Prone and Joe's is in play, does this mean I have to discard two Events to play one Event?
A4.3 Yes. The Prone effect is cumulative with other similar effects like the Joe's Location and even Master's Advance.

Q4.4 If I play Reconnaissance on Slaughter House during a turn in which I do not attack, can I play Special cards during my next turn?
A4.4 No. During your next turn, Slaughter House will look back to your last turn to see that you didn't play an attack and will then prevent you from playing a Special card this turn. You would have to play Reconnaissance on Slaughter House the turn in which it would prevent you from playing Special cards because you didn't attack on your last turn.

Q4.5 When do you check to see if your are Prone for Sulphur Plant?
A4.5 Immediately after an attack is made a Power Blow or after a block is made a Power Block. If an attack or block is inherently a Power Blow or Power Block (i.e. Master Swordsman), then you must roll to see if you are Prone immediately after playing such an attack or block.

Q4.6 Can the A&T Alertness be used so I can play a dodge with more than 3 areas if The Circle is in play?
A4.6 Yes. The Circle is preventing you from playing dodges, even though it's only certain dodges.

Q4.7 If the Theatre is in play and something forces me to discard certain types of cards, what do I do?
A4.7 Pull all those cards that fit the description of the cards you must discard and randomly determine from those cards which ones are discarded. For example, if Theatre is in play and your opponent plays Caught in the Act forcing you to discard 3 attacks, take all of the attacks from your hand and shuffle them and then randomly choose 3 of them and discard them. Put the rest back into your hand. In the case of something like Kiss Your Butts Goodbye, you would still discard all dodges since choosing them at random still doesn't change the fact that you must discard them all.

*Q4.8 Does Pedestrian: Hidden "prevent" you from playing an attack, for the purposes of stuff like Slaughter House?
*A4.8 Yes. Pedestrian: Hidden is only allowing you to play Hidden Attacks which is essentially preventing you from playing non-Hidden Attacks. So Pedestrian: Hidden is considered to be a card which is preventing you from playing attacks.

5. Situations

Q5.1 Change of Fortune says to discard before my opponent makes a die roll, but do I decide to add or subtract one from the result before or after he actually rolls the die?
A5.1 Before.

Q5.2 Shouldn't Cull the Weak and Duelist be Plots?
A5.2 No. They work similar to Plots, but each card has an effect on the game instead of just building up to a single Event like Plots do.

Q5.3 Defensive Stance says I can play a Guard if my opponent did not play an attack during his last turn. Can't I do that anyway?
A5.3 No. With the new Arms and Tactics Edition Rulebook, you can no longer play an 'unprovoked' Guard. You can only play a Guard if it is actually used to block an attack.

Q5.4 Gypsy's Curse talks about the Gypsy Lover card but I don't have one? Is it suppose to be in Arms and Tactics?
A5.4 Gypsy Lover is a card from the original Series Edition of Highlander: The Card Game.

Q5.5 If I have In Cold Blood in play and play a Ranged Attack, can I declare the Ranged Attack is for the Ally he has in play? And if so, doesn't this mean he's going to lose that Ally since he can't block it?
A5.5 You can direct any kind of attack against an Ally in play with In Cold Blood. And if it just so happens to be a Ranged Attack, your opponent is more than likely going to lose that Ally since he can only prevent the loss of the Ally by blocking the attack and Ranged Attacks cannot be blocked.

Q5.6 What happens if an Ally I choose for In Cold Blood is one of my own?
A5.6 Your opponent still has the option of playing a block to keep the Ally in play, but if he doesn't block the attack, then the Ally is discarded.

Q5.7 If Kanis plays a Focus on his Nemesis card and plays a Hound, does the Hound get discarded at the end of his turn when Nemesis is no longer Focused?
A5.7 No. The Nemesis only discards any Hounds in play when it is played.

Q5.8 If I Focus Rules of the Game and play another one, is one of them removed at the end of that turn?
A5.8 No. Rules of the Game is only removed when another Rules of the Game is played. Since it was Focused at the time another Rules of the Game was played, then it's possible to have more than one Rules of the Game in play.

Q5.9 If my opponent plays Mugging while Rules of the Game (Events) is in play, does he loss 1 Ability, or only if Mugging actually does damage?
A5.9 Anytime a player plays an Event that does damage or has a chance of doing damage, he will lose 1 Ability.

Q5.10 Will Shifting Sands modify any other effects which may cause a player to be Prone, or just the effects of Sulphur Plant?
A5.10 Any effects which have a chance of a player becoming Prone will be increased by 2 in 6 if Shifting Sands is in play.

*Q5.11 Does Pedestrian: Hidden "prevent" you from playing an attack, for the purposes of The Gathering?
*A5.11 Yes. Pedestrian: Hidden is only allowing you to play Hidden Attacks which is essentially preventing you from playing non-Hidden Attacks. So Pedestrian: Hidden is considered to be a card which is preventing you from playing attacks.

6. Edges

Q6.1 Are the new Alertness cards errata'd versions of the originals?
A6.1 No. These Alertness cards are and work differently from the originals.

Q6.2 Will the new Alertness help me against cards that prevent me from playing a dodge or block unless I do something else (i.e. Master's Advance, Debra?)
A6.2 In this case, no. Such cards do not state 'you cannot play a dodge unless you discard one', but instead say 'you must discard a dodge to play a dodge.' Though the end result is the same, those cards are not preventing you from playing blocks or attacks.

Q6.3 Does it matter which Narrow Escape I play Run For Your Life with?
A6.3 No. You can play it with either version.

Q6.4 Who rolls the die when The Bigger They Are... is played?
A6.4 The player of The Bigger They Are...

Q6.5 Can I play either There Can Be Only One! If my opponent isn't at zero Ability?
A6.5 Yes, but then they have no effect on the attack.

7. Crystals

*Q7.1 The text is mildly unclear on the Crystals. Can I substitute a defense for a Basic Attack? Can I substitute a non-Special attack for a Basic Block?
*A7.1 The intention is that by using a Crystal you can substitute one Basic Attack for one non-Special Attack or one Basic Defense for any one defense. So you cannot substitute and attack for a defense or visa versa. You may see an update in errata to reflect this.

*Q7.2 If I have 3 Crystals in play, I can replace up to 9 Basics because each Crystals says I can replace a Basic for each Crystal I have, right?
*A7.2 No. Each Crystal you have in play will only allow you to replace one Basic. If you have 3 Crystals, then you can substitute 3 Basics.

8. Arms and Tactics Premiums

Q8.1 I'm still confused as to what is considered a Premium card.
A8.1 As will be evident in the next version of the rulebook there are two definitions of a Premium card. All Premium cards are chase cards which are either gold foil or a plastic lamanent. Within this definition of a Premium there are also what is known as Persona Premiums. Persona Premiums are those Premiums which are played in conjunction with your Persona. Persona Premiums are all restricted to one and cannot be removed from the game.

*Q8.2 Exactly how many of your opponent's cards will Arms & Tactics/Counter let you ignore? It says to discard it and "play cards as normal." If my opponent played Renee Delaney and has The Circle in play, can I ignore both cards and "play CARDS as normal", or just one specific one?
*A8.2 The Arms and Tactics Premium will allow you to ignore the effects of all cards in play which are preventing you from playing cards.

*Q8.3 Are the pre-game Arms & Tactics cards Premiums? And are they restricted in any way? How many can I have in my deck, within the six pre-game limit
*A8.3 The Arms and Tactics Premiums are considered Premiums, but not Persona Premiums which are restricted to 1. You can have any number of Arms and Tactics Premiums, however each one does still take up one of your six Pre-Game slots.

-------- Section B: Immortals --------

9. Ceirdwyn

Q9.1 If I have Alaine in play, can I only pull attacks from an Exertion I make to search for attacks or any Exertion I make?
A9.1 Any Exertion you make.

Q9.2 Ceirdwyn's Battle Rage does the same thing as her Persona Power. Does this mean I get to play two additional attacks for each Ally I have in play?
A9.2 Yes.

Q9.3 Callum does cover a lot of ground. Does this mean I can block Ranged Attacks now?
A9.3 Nope. Blocks will not work on Ranged Attacks at all. Unless, of course, a card specifically says it does (i.e. Shield's Under Cover).

Q9.4 With Ceirdwyn's Flashback, can I duplicate the effects of an Edge which is normally played in conjunction with certain other cards?
A9.4 Yes. You are duplicating the cards effects and don't need to meet any requirements of the card.

Q9.5 Can I player Ceirdwyn's Retribution if my opponent used In Cold Blood to remove one of my Allies?
A9.5 No. The Ally is removed during your turn and not his. The Ally has to have been removed from play during his turn for you to be able to play Retribution.

10. Kanis

Q10.1 Are the Hounds Allies?
A10.1 No. Even though they are subtitled with the names of the dogs, they are not considered Allies since the name does not appear in the title of the card.

Q10.2 If I have all three Hounds in play, does my opponent only have to discard 3 defenses to be able to play blocks, dodges, and attacks?
A10.2 No. He must discard one defense for each Hound to be able to play blocks, one defense for each Hound to play blocks, and one defense for each Hound to play attacks. So, if he wishes to play blocks, dodges, and attacks during his turn he will have to discard 9 defenses.

Q10.3 Are the Hounds cumulative with similar effects (i.e. Master's Advance]?
A10.3 Yes. If you had Master's Advance in play with Lancaster, your opponent must discard a defense for each Hound you have then he must discard a dodge to play the dodge.

11. Kanwulf

Q11.1 When I discard defenses for Kanwulf's Persona Power, can I choose the same effect more than once?
A11.2 No. For each defense you discard, you must choose a different effect.

*Q11.2 Can I discard 2 or 3 defenses using his Persona Power then decide not to use any of the effects?
*A11.2 No. If you discard defenses to use his Persona Power, then you must choose which effects are to be used and do them. However, something may occur which will prevent you from using the benefit for which you discarded a defense. For example, Kanwulf begins his turn by discarding a defense to play an additional attack that turn. During his Defense Phase, however, he plays a Back Away. Since he can only play Ranged Attacks and does not have any in his hand, he then loses the benefit for which he discarded the defense. The same can be said when Kanwulf discards a defense to retrieve a Basic Attack from his Discard Pile but there are no Basic Attacks in his Discard Pile. With a little work, Kanwulf can actually use this as a cycling benefit without having to abide by any further benefits or effects for doing so.

Q11.3 When I play Battle Rage and discard defenses, do I get an additional attack for each defense I discarded for Battle Rage or for Battle Rage and for any other defenses I discarded during my turn?
A11.3 You get an additional attack for each defense you discarded for the Battle Rage. However, if you also used Kanwulf's Persona Power and discarded a defense to play an additional attack, then that attack is not considered part of the Battle Rage attacks and a dodge can be carried over from a previous attack to dodge it.

Q11.4 When do my opponent's discard their Allies after I play Sacrifice?
A11.4 They may discard an Ally from play or from their hand anytime before their next Ability Adjustment Phase, at which time they will take 2 damage if they have not discarded an Ally either from play or from their hand.

12. Martin Hyde

Q12.1 Is Martin Hyde's Persona Power in addition to drawing/discard normally, or replaces my normal draw/discard during my Draw/Discard Phase.
A12.1 During Hyde's Draw/Discard Phase, instead of drawing up to his Ability or discarding down to his Ability, he may draw up to or must discard down to a number of cards equal to his Ability minus the number of Master cards his opponent's Persona allows his opponent. For example, if Martin Hyde had an Ability of 15 and was playing against Connor MacLeod, during his Draw/Discard Phase he can draw up to 22 cards, but must discard down to 22 cards if he has more than 22 in his hand.

Q12.2 Hyde's Combination says defenses will not block or avoid multiple attacks. Is this for any attacks you play that turn, or just your original attack and the additional attack for Combination?
A12.2 It effects all attacks Hyde plays that turn.

Q12.3 If I play Hunter, can my opponent play Concentration to ignore it's effects and play Special and Edge cards even though he can't play Edge cards?
A12.3 Yes. Such cards are usually played during the Sweep Phase while playing 'May Do' effects. Since this isn't during his Defense Phase, he can play Concentration and ignore the effects of Hunter.

Q12.4 If I have something that allows me to make Power Blows or Power Blocks with a 0-card Exertion, can I still make Power Blows or Power Blocks if Hyde plays Intimidate?
A12.4 No. Though it's 0-cards, you are still making an Exertion which Intimidate prevents you from doing.

Q12.5 If my opponent plays a Watcher: Healer which means he 'gains' 2 Ability, is Hyde's Stalk still unblockable and undodgeable?
A12.5 Yes. Any card played which increases his Ability, whether it uses the word 'gained', 'increases', etc. is considered to increase his Ability.

Q12.6 What if my opponent plays a Police on Poison Gas. Is that considered as a card played which increases his Ability?
A12.6 No. The effects of the card played have to increase his Ability.

13. Paul Kinman

Q13.1 If my opponent plays a defense and guesses wrong against one of my Hidden Attacks, can he still make an Exertion for a defense to play against other attacks.
A13.1 Nope. Once he guesses wrong against any Hidden Attack you play, then he can't make an Exertion to search for a defense at all that turn.

Q13.2 What's this weird Icon on 9mm?
A13.2 See Section D: New Game Mechanics - Hand Icons.

Q13.3 So I have to be using a one-handed Weapon of Choice to use one 9mm, and must be completely disarmed to be using two 9mms, right?
A13.3 Correct.

Q13.4 So if I have a 9mm in play, I have to be completely disarmed to play Reload?
A13.4 Correct. Both 9mm and Reload have Hand Icons on them and you cannot have more than two Hand Icons in play. If you already have two Hand Icons in play, you cannot play anything that has Hand Icons on it. Remember, that any player not using a Weapon of Choice is still considered to be using a one-handed (1 Hand Icon) weapon.

Q13.5 Can I use Deceiver with an Ally to prevent damage from an attack?
A13.5 Yes, attacks are cards as well as any other card that does damage.

Q13.6 Do I have to discard the Ally somehow to get the benefits of Contract Killer?
A13.6 No. If, for any reason, the Ally is discarded, you either gain 1 Ability or may search your Endurance for one card.

14. Generic Immortals

*Q14.1 Can I use a Premium Darius from The Watcher Chronicles Expansion to raise the Master limit of the new Generic Immortals by one?
*A14.1 Yes.

*Q14.2 Ok, then can both the Starter Box Generic Immortal and the 'Galen' Generic Immortal use an extra Reserved card with the extra Master card allowed by Premium Darius?
*A14.2 Yes. The Premium Darius raises their Master limitation by 1 to 4. And since both can use Reserved Cards as Master Cards, they can essentially use another Reserved Card as well.

15. Other Immortals

Q15.1 Does Annie's Eye for an Eye include damage from successful attacks played by your opponent?
A15.1 Yes.

Q15.2 Can I still play defenses after finding out if an attack was avoided with Duncan's Master of Disguise?
A15.2 Yes. After determining which attacks were avoided, you may still play defenses against those that were not.

Q15.3 What if my opponent only has 2 blocks in his hand after I play Kalas' Insurance which forces him to discard 3 blocks?
A15.3 If he only has 1 or 2 blocks, he must discard those blocks. But then, since he discarded at least 1 block, Insurance won't do any damage to him.

Q15.4 What happens if Theatre is in play and I have Kalas' Insurance which allows me to discard cards from my opponent's hand if he has to discard during his Draw/Discard Phase?
A15.4 You would take his hand and randomly choose which cards to discard and discard them for him.

Q15.5 If I play a Thrust and make it a Power Blow, can I discard Kern's Musket to make it a Ranged Attack?
A15.5 No. Ranged Attacks cannot be Power Blows and visa-versa.

Q15.6 Does Luther's Incense of Pain include any time my opponent regains Ability due to something like Poison Gas leaving play?
A15.6 Yes. It does not matter how or why your opponent's Ability increased.

Q15.7 If my opponent had In Cold Blood in play and played Nefertiri's Have a Good Life, could I not block the attack he played against the Ally and discard it to avoid taking damage from Have a Good Life?
A15.7 No. You would have to remove the Ally before the Ally is removed by the successful attack to avoid taking damage from Have A Good Life.

Q15.8 What would happen to the attack if I discarded the Ally before it became successful?
A15.8 It would then have no effect since the Ally is no longer in play.

Q15.9 Richie's Master's Attack doesn't have any areas on it's gird. Is this a mistake?
A15.9 Nope. When Richie's Master's Attack is played, it not only duplicates the effects of an attack played during your opponent's last turn, but the areas on it's grid as well.

Q15.10 What if my opponent didn't play an attack? Can I still play Richie's Master's Attack?
A15.10 Nope. Your opponent must have played an attack during his last turn for you to be able to play Richie's Master's Attack and duplicate it.

Q15.11 Does this mean I can duplicate the areas and effects of Duncan's Master's Head Shot if my opponent plays it? Or any other Signatured attack?
A15.11 Sure; if you survive to have an Attack Phase, that is.

Q15.12 If I were to use a Darius Event to add Slan's Brute to my Paul Kinman deck, I could essentially use the Claymore as a one-handed weapon and still be able to play one of my 9mms, right?
A15.12 Correct.

Q15.13 What happens if Brute then gets removed?
A15.13 You would either have to discard the 9mm or become disarmed, your choice.

Q15.14 If a Slash covers an upper area as well as a middle and lower area, does Slan's Mask reduce the damage by one?
A15.14 No. The attack must be to the upper area only for Slan's Mask to reduce it's damage by one.

-------- Section C: Weapons of Choice --------

16. Weapons of Choice

Q16.1 Since I can have up to two Hand Icons in play, can I play with two one-handed Weapons of Choice?
A16.1 No. You can normally only have one Weapon of Choice.

Q16.2 Can I use the Darius Event to add Weapon Specific cards to my deck?
A16.2 Yes, but since you are not using the appropriate Weapon of Choice, they cannot be played. Weapon Specific cards require that you use the appropriate Weapon of Choice not only to include the cards in your deck, but to play them as well. This is similar to an Immortal's Signature cards.

Q16.3 What happens if I am disarmed?
A16.3 While you are disarmed, turn your Weapon of Choice face down. If has no effect on play while you are disarmed and you cannot play any Weapon Specific cards for that Weapon of Choice.

17. Broad Bladed Spear

Q17.1 If I am using the Broad Bladed Spear, can I still make a Hidden Attack if I play Trip or there is a Mountain Cave in play?
A17.1 No. You can never make attacks you play Hidden.

18. Claymore

Q18.1 When does my opponent discard cards from his Endurance for playing successful blocks?
A18.1 When the block is played and it is determined to be successful, your opponent must immediately discard the top card of his Endurance.

Q18.2 Claymore reduces the size of all Standard Exertions by 2. What is a Standard Exertion?
A18.2 Any Exertion made to make a block a Power Block, make an attack a Power Blow, to search for a defense, or to search for an attack are all considered to be Standard Exertions.

Q18.3 Claymore's Cleave attacks do not say how much damage they do. How much damage does a Cleave do?
A18.3 Any attack does 2 damage if it does not say otherwise. Cleave does 2 damage if successful.

19. Gladius

Q19.1 When I discard a defense from my hand for making a Power Block, is this only for when I make an Exertion to make a block a Power Block?
A19.1 No. This includes any time you play a defense and that defense is considered a Power Block as well (i.e. Master Swordsman).

Q19.2 If I play more than one Deflect and the last block I play is Deflect, do I only get one additional attack, or one additional attack for each Deflect I played?
A19.2 You only get one additional attack for the last Deflect you played if it successfully blocked an attack.

Q19.3 When I play a Stab and am able to make it a Hidden Attack, do I have to tell my opponent that it is undodgeable?
A19.3 No. You only have to declare whether a Hidden Attack is a Power Blow or not.

Q19.4 What happens if I play a Twist or two with a Dirty Trick?
A19.4 Since Dirty Tricks do no damage, then the additional damage from the Twists is lost.

*Q19.5 Can you modify a Ranged Attack with a Twist/Gladius or Lunge, by modifying the attack before using Kern's Musket or Corda and Reno's Equalizer?
*A19.5 Currently, yes. However, this may change in the near future with the release of Highlander: The Rulebook which should be out before the end of the year.

20. Katana Sword

Q20.1 With Lightning Reflexes, why would I want to take a block I played this turn back into my hand if I have to discard it this turn?
A20.1 Because you can play it again this turn, which is important if your opponent happened to play multiple attacks against you that turn and you don't quite have all the blocks you need to block all of the attacks. Annie's new Flashback is a perfect example of one reason why you would want to be able to play the same block more than once during a turn.

Q20.2 If I'm using the Katana as a one-handed weapon and using the Parrying Blade Weapon of Choice, can I choose to make the Katana a two-handed weapon and disarm my Parrying Blade?
A20.2 No. You cannot play any cards that would make you have more than two Hand Icons in play, and in Katana's case, you cannot make it a two-handed weapon if you already have two Hand Icons in play.

21. Parrying Blade

Q21.1 Can I use the Parrying Blade by itself?
A21.1 No. Parrying Blade requires you to be using another Weapon of Choice that is also one-handed. This is the one of only two cases (see 24. Shield) in which you can have two Weapons of Choice in play.

Q21.2 What happens if I am disarmed? Do I lose both weapons?
A21.2 If your opponent has disarmed you, he then chooses which Weapon of Choice has been disarmed. It is then turned over and has no effect on game play and you cannot play any Weapon Specific cards for that Weapon of Choice. Even though you may have another Weapon of Choice that is not disarmed, you may still roll a die at the beginning of each turn and on a one (1) will regain your disarmed weapon. Also, as long as you have one Weapon of Choice in play (with the exception of the Shield, see later), you can still attack and block normally.

Q21.3 Can I make Parrying Blade's Surprise Strike Hidden if I play an Evade, Duck, Jump, or any other dodge other than Dodge?
A21.3 Yes. The word 'dodge' shouldn't have been capitalized. If the last defense you played was any kind of dodge, you may make this attack Hidden.

22. Rapier

Q22.1 If I am using a Rapier and play a Special Attack which specifically says that it does 3 damage, will the Rapier reduce it's damage to 2?
A22.1 No. Rapier only reduces the damage of Basic Attacks by one.

Q22.2 If I play Bleeding Wound with an attack, does my opponent immediately take 1 damage next turn, whether the attack `was successful or not?
A22.2 No. Your opponent will not take damage until the turn after the attack played with Bleeding Wound is successful.

Q22.3 How much damage does Slice do?
A22.3 All attacks do 2 damage unless they say otherwise.

*Q22.4 Depending on which Dodge you play, is there a case where you can have Rapier in play, play Dodge, and then play a Special Attack. Some Dodges say "Lose your next attack," some say, "Lose 1 attack."
*A22.4 Both essentially mean the same. You would lose your attack for that turn, but still be able to play an additional attack with a Rapier although that attack must be a non-Special Attack.

23. Saber

Q23.1 Do Saber's Guards follow all the normal rules for Guards?
A23.1 Yes.

Q23.2 How much damage do Saber's Slashes do?
A23.2 All attacks do 2 damage unless they say otherwise.

24. Shield

Q24.1 Can I use a Shield by itself?
A24.1 No. Shield requires that you use another Weapon of Choice that is also one-handed. This is one of only two cases (see 21. Parrying Blade) in which you can have two Weapons of Choice in play.

Q24.2 Can I play attacks if I am disarmed but still have Shield in play.
A24.2 No. Shield should also say, "If you are disarmed and Shield is the only Weapon of Choice you have in play, you cannot play attacks." You can still play blocks, however.

Q24.3 I thought you could never block Ranged Attacks, but Under Cover says I can?
A24.3 Correct. Under Cover is the only card/effect/exception in all of Highlander: The Card Game which allows you to block a Ranged Attack.

*Q24.4 If you play a Basic Block and it stays in play "as a Guard", is it a Guard?
*A24.4 Yes. Anything that effect Guards or Standing Defenses will effect these 'Guards' as well.

25. War Axe

Q25.1 If I play War Axe's Attack Weapon, is there still a chance of my opponent's weapon breaking if he makes a Power Block?
A25.1 Yes. If he plays a block at all against the attack you played with Attack Weapon, then there is a 2 in 6 chance (4 in 6 if the attack was a Power Blow) of your opponent's weapon breaking.

Q25.2 When I have the War Axe's Quality Blade, what areas can I extend a Basic Block to?
A25.2 An adjoining area on the grid is any area that is next to (above, below, to the left or right) or diagonal to one area already covered by the block.

Q25.3 Why does War Axe's Throw say I can play it even if I have two Hand Icons in play?
A25.3 The Arms and Tactics rules have updated rules on Ranged Attacks which state that you cannot play a Ranged Attack if you have two Hand Icons in play. In the case of War Axe's Throw, you can ignore this restriction. Which is important, since War Axe is normally a two-handed (2 Hand Icons) weapon.

26. Hand Icons

Q26.1 What is a Hand Icon?
A26.1 A Hand Icon is a little white Hand Icon you will find mostly among the Weapons of Choice, but there are a few regular cards which have them on the right side of the title bar. Hand Icons depict cards and effects which usually require the use of a hand to be used. Obviously , Weapons of Choice require you to use your hands, be it just one or both. But there are also some other cards which might require a hand as well. These cards will have a Hand Icon on them as well (i.e. Dirty Trick: Choke, Paul Kinman's Reload).

Q26.2 What is a "Free Hand"?
A26.2 A "Free Hand" is an easier way of saying you have less than two Hand Icons in play.

Q26.3 What if something happens and I wind up with more than two Hand Icons in play?
A26.3 First of all, if you already have two Hand Icons in play, you cannot play any cards which would increase the number of Hand Icons in play. But if it does managed to happen, then you must discard any cards in play to bring the number of Hand Icons you have in play to two. This may mean getting rid of a card in play with a Hand Icon or even having to disarm a Weapon of Choice. In either case, you get to decide which Hand Icon is lost.

27. Prone

Q27.1 What happens when I am Prone?
A27.1 While a player is considered Prone, they must discard a card of the same type as any card they play. This means if he plays an Event, he must discard an Event. If he plays a Special Attack, he must discard a Special Attack.

Q27.2 How do I become un-Prone?
A27.2 At the beginning of each turn, there is a 1 in 6 chance of your 'regaining your feet'. However, you can increase these chance to 3 in 6 by making an Exertion before rolling the die.

Q27.3 If I am Prone and I only have one dodge in my hand to play against an unblockable attack, can I play a card which will allow me to ignore effects which prevent me from playing dodges since I don't have one to discard?
A27.3 No. Being Prone means having to discard cards to play them, but it doesn't specifically prevent you from playing any cards.
